Warsaw Sports Wrap – April 16
The Warsaw girls tennis team dropped a tough 3-2 final at Columbia City Thursday.
The host Eagles, who will play in the Warsaw Sectional later this season, rallied to win both doubles matches in three sets to earn the win.
The Tigers, who lost 3-2 to Fort Wayne Canterbury in the season opener at home Tuesday evening, were led by Colette Smith and Liza Lewis at the top two doubles spots.
Freshman Smith defeated Rachel Flauding 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Fellow freshman Lewis topped Maddy Minnick 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
City’s Hannah Clark defeated Shelby Roberts 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
The No. 1 doubles duo of Macie Hinen and Aubrey Wright rallied to top Athena Schlitt and Ella Knight 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. The No. 2 doubles team of Baylee Smith and Cassie Bosselman of City stopped Camille Kerlin and Sydney Hartman 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Warsaw won the junior varsity competition 5-1. Winning for the Tigers in JV singles play were Hannah Rice, Grace Miller and Libby Jenkins. Winning in doubles for Warsaw were the team of Greer Smith and Chelsea Farling and the duo of Bonnie Wong and Courtney Thompson.
Warsaw (0-2) will host its own eight-team tournament Saturday.
Softball Team Clipped By Carroll
The Warsaw softball team dropped a 12-2 final at home to Carroll (Allen) on Wednesday night.
Sidney Hernandez had a pair of hits to lead the Tigers. Sarah Shoemaker added a two-run double for Warsaw.
Warsaw (0-4) will play at Columbia City on Saturday.
The Warsaw junior varsity team posted a 24-6 win at Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday.
