Robert E. Bird, Sr, 91, of Culver, died early morning on Saturday, March 21 in St Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.

Robert was born to Earl and Carrie Bird on Oct. 15, 1923 in Du Quoin, Ill. Upon her remarriage, he was reared by Carrie and Kenny Stevens, along with his two sisters: Loretta Stevens Butts, Marion, Ill.; and the late Irma Jean Stevens, Kankakee, Ill.

Robert joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in Giant City, Illinois at the age of 16 and soon followed with an enlistment in the US Army in 1940. He rose to be Staff Sergeant during his almost five years in Company G of the 10th Infantry, where he was a light machine gunner. During these years, he distinguished himself by earning the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart for bravery during battle in the European theater.

Upon his discharge in 1946, Robert married Lois Turner. They parented three children during their 28 year marriage: Betty (David) Munchenburg, Merrillville; Robert (Paulette) Bird, Jr., Charles Town, W.Va.; and the late Patricia Bird, La Porte. In addition, Robert has 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

In 1981, Robert married Gladys Beck-Hinson, who preceded him in death in 2006. From this marriage, he had two step-daughters: Theatus (Ted) Miller; and Juanita (Gene) Ponsler, Texas, as well as three step-grandchildren.

Friends joined Robert’s family in celebrating his determined commitment to life at the Odom Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 24.
