Indy Zoo tigersThe Indianapolis Zoo has welcomed a pair of endangered Amur tigers as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan program.

Luka and Maxim, who are both two years old, were born at the Peoria Zoo in Illinois. The brothers join the zoo’s other Amur tigers, six year old Andrea and her cub Zoya.

Visitors will be able to see the tigers in the zoo’s Tiger Forest. Zookeepers say Luka and Maxim are very active and love to play in the water together.

Amur tigers are native to Russia. One of six surviving tiger sub-species, their population once numbered in the tens of thousands. However, less than 500 of these endangered tigers are now estimated to live in the wild.
