
INDIANAPOLIS – The Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team will not have to make a long bus ride for semi state.
The Vikings, fresh off the program’s first-ever regional championship Saturday, will face a familiar foe on a familiar floor.
No. 9 Valley will meet unranked Rochester at approximately 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Class 3-A Northern Semistate game in the Tiger Den at WCHS.
Valley, which won two overtime thrillers Saturday to claim the Bellmont Regional crown, won at Warsaw 38-36 way back on Nov. 21 in the second game of the regular season.
The Vikings defeated Muncie Central 50-41 in overtime and then outlasted Norwell 47-45 in overtime in the title game at Bellmont Saturday.
Valley, boasting a program best mark of 24-2, beat the Zebras 52-40 in a Three Rivers Conference game in Akron on Jan. 17.
Rochester, which will make its first semi state appearance since its state championship season in 2003-04, beat No. 1 Benton Central 63-42 and Hanover Central 52-38 Saturday to win the Rochester Regional. The Zebras beat No. 2 South Bend St. Joseph 51-47 in the sectional finale at Jimtown.
The Warsaw Semistate Saturday begins with the Class 2-A game at 4 p.m. pitting No. 4 Wabash (24-3) versus No. 2 Fort Wayne Canterbury (22-2). Canterbury, coached by Wayne Kreiger, was state runner-up a year ago.
The Crown Point Semistate on Saturday begins at 1 p.m. (ET) with the Class 1-A clash between No. 6 Oregon-Davis (19-7) and No. 2 Lafayette Central Catholic (22-6). That will be followed by the Class 4-A game pitting No. 4 Homestead (25-2) against No. 9 Merrillville (21-7). Oregon-Davis is the defending Class 1-A state champion. Merrillville beat Warsaw Saturday in a semifinal game of the LaPorte Regional.
The semi state winners advance to the State Finals March 7 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The first session begins with the Class 1-A finale at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Class 2-A title tilt. The second session starts at 6 p.m. with the Class 3-A final, followed by the Class 4-A state title contest.
