As of 3 p.m. today (Saturday) the Elkhart County Board of Commissioners declared a snow emergency for Elkhart County. Elkhart County is at risk from a severe winter storm that will include zero temperatures and wind chills, significant snowfall, and strong winds that will cause near-blizzard conditions with widespread drifting of roads, and near zero visibility. Travel on roadways has become hazardous and a state of emergency has been declared under the provisions of IC 10-14-3-29.

During this emergency, citizens are asked to cooperate with county ordinance 2013-153 that mandates that no travel on county roadways is permitted during the emergency. The only exception to this provision is for emergency crews and county highway workers carrying out their official duties.

The Sheriff’s Department is working with county officials to monitor the status of the snow emergency as well as the road conditions. The snow emergency will be reviewed again at noon Sunday, Feb. 15.
