Bruce Lifts Goshen To Victory

goshenGOSHEN – Tahya Bruce got to play hero inside her home gymnasium Friday night.

The Goshen junior hit a pair of free throws with 6.8 seconds to play to lift the Redskins past Elkhart Memorial 40-39 in the second semifinal game of the Class 4-A Goshen Sectional.

Goshen (11-12) will meet Warsaw (14-10) Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in the sectional championship game. Warsaw beat Elkhart Central 38-9 in the first semifinal contest Friday night.

The Goshen Sectional champion advances to the LaPorte Regional Feb. 21 to play the Michigan City Sectional winner in the second semifinal game. Merrillville will meet Valparaiso Saturday night in the title tilt at Michigan City.

The Redskins, who lost 54-33 to Memorial on Jan. 30, found a way to get it done Friday night.

Memorial led 9-8 after the opening period and 25-17 at halftime. The Crimson Chargers were up 33-29 after the third quarter.

Junior Alyssa Hershberger and sophomore Ashton Ellis each scored 10 points to lead Goshen. Junior Olivia Love had nine and Bruce finished with eight.

Freshman Sierra Peete had 13 points and freshman Cydney Lapczynski 12 to lead Memorial. The Crimson Chargers finish at 11-12.

Goshen lost 44-37 to Warsaw on Jan. 17 at Warsaw.
