Youth Paces Memorial Sectional Win

elkhart memorialGOSHEN – The young kids had it going on once again for the Elkhart Memorial girls basketball team Tuesday night.

Freshman Cydney Lapczynski tossed in a game-high 15 points as the Crimson Chargers defeated Concord 57-35 in a first-round game of the Class 4-A Goshen Sectional.

Memorial, which beat Concord 57-54 in overtime during the regular season, advances to play Goshen (10-12) Friday night in the second semifinal game. Warsaw (13-10) meets Elkhart Central (5-16) Friday night in the first semifinal contest at 6 p.m. Memorial, now 11-11, beat Goshen 54-33 earlier this season.

The Crimson Chargers broke open the game with a big third-quarter effort. Memorial led 26-17 at halftime before outscoring Concord 16-3 in the third stanza to take complete command of the contest.

Freshman Kambria Dale had nine points and freshman Sierra Peete eight for Memorial.

Junior Adreanna Jones scored 11 points and had 16 rebounds for the Crimson Chargers and sophomore Skylar Axsom had seven.

Coach Steve Scott’s Memorial team has just two seniors on the sectional roster. The Chargers have seven freshmen.

Senior MacKenzie Rutter and sophomore Tylar Roberson each had eight points to lead Concord. Senior Keaonna Clopton had six points.

Concord finishes the season at 7-15 under coach Dan Ross.
