Upcoming events this week:

Preschool Story Time

Developing early literacy skills is important to a child’s future success in school. Help your young child get ready for reading and learning by involving them in the library’s Preschool Story Time. Registration for the winter session starts on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The session is 10 weeks and will run every Wednesday from Feb. 4 until April 8. There is a choice of two time periods, at either 10:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m.

Children ages 3 to 5 will have fun learning about the farm through stories about farm animals, finger plays, games and crafts. It also provides an opportunity for socialization with other children. You can sign your child up for story time at the Youth Services desk beginning Wednesday, Jan. 21, by calling (574) 834-7122 ext. 202 or by email at [email protected].

The library has a large collection of books that parents can check out to take home and read to their children as well. Although you need an Evergreen library card to borrow materials, you don’t need a library card for your child to participate in Preschool Story Time.

Teen Time

Staying involved in reading and learning remains just as important throughout the teen years. Youth in grades 6 through high school are invited to Teen Time at 4:30 p.m. on the third Thursday each month. A different activity that appeals to teens is planned each month.

On Thursday, Jan. 22, the teens will explore factions from the world of “Divergent,” a movie based on the novel by Veronica Roth, and make their choice at the library’s version of the Choosing Ceremony. They will also watch a clip of the movie, decorate tote bags with faction symbols, and snack on faction foods. It will be a fun time based on this popular young adult novel and movie.

Writer’s Corner

This group meets at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19. Participants meet to share the essays they have written about a window. Each month, the group writes about a different topic, focusing on expressing their ideas in writing and encouraging each other. If you like to write or want to learn how, join us for Writer’s Corner on the third Monday morning of each month.

R.E.A.D Book Club

At 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, the book club meets to discuss “Memoirs of Mary, Queen of Scots” a historical novel by Carrolly Erickson. Next month, the group will be reading and discussing “Dear Mrs. Lindbergh” by Kathleen Hughes. A number of copies have been reserved, so stop by the front desk to pick one up. If you enjoy reading a variety of books and talking about what you have read, R.E.A.D book club meets the third Monday of every month.

Lose It at the Library

Weekly weigh-in and exercise begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19. This free weight loss support group meets at 5:30 p.m. every Monday.
