Snider Stops Warsaw Winning Streak
FORT WAYNE – An impressive winning streak came to an end Saturday night for the Warsaw boys basketball team.
The Tigers dug a first-half hole and never recovered in a 48-40 loss to a long and athletic Fort Wayne Snider team in non-conference play.
Warsaw, playing its third road game in five days, sees its nine-game winning streak snapped. The Tigers, whose only other loss was a 60-59 setback at Homestead back on Dec. 5, drops to 11-2.
Snider, which has won its last five games, improves to 10-3.
The hosts led just 9-7 after the opening period before taking control with a big second quarter. Snider outscored Warsaw 20-5 in the pivotal period to take a commanding 29-12 lead at halftime.
Warsaw, ranked No. 11 in Class 4-A, shot just 3-16 from the field in the opening half. Snider connected on 12-25 shots in the first half.
Kyle Mangas led the Tigers with 16 points. Tim Swanson scored nine points for Warsaw.
Jaylin Fowler led Snider with 13 points. Devlyn Williams netted 11 and Malik Williams 10 to go with nine rebounds.
“We did not have it tonight,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle in a text message following the game. “Maybe a little bit of how we played was that this was our third road game in five days. But most of how we played was due to how difficult Snider is to play against because of their length and athleticism.
“Our players never gave up, but Snider was quite a bit better than us tonight.”
Nick Sands had six points and six rebounds and Riley Rhoades four points for the Tigers.
Warsaw shot just 13-44 overall from the field, including 8-22 on 3-pointers. The Tigers were 6-10 from the free throw line.
Snider finished 18-39 from the field and 3-7 from three-point land. The hosts were 9-14 from the line.
Snider won the JV contest 39-34. Braxton Minix scored 12 points and Rane Kilburn had 11 to lead Warsaw.
Warsaw hosts Concord Friday in a conference game and then hosts Fort Wayne Northrop Saturday night. Snider plays at Fort Wayne Canterbury Tuesday night.
