Harry Edward Warren, 96, was honored as the Veteran of the Month at the Jan. 13 Kosciusko County Commissioners meeting.
“Harry is an amazing guy,” said Rich Maron, Veteran Affairs officer. “He shared a lot of neat stories with me.”
He was born on Christmas Eve 1918. There was a terrible snow storm the night he was born, and the doctor couldn’t get to his family’s house to help deliver him. Warren was delivered by his father. The doctor did make it over the next day to check on the newborn. He charged the family a dollar.
Warren grew up just south of Atwood. At age 16, he survived a burst appendix. And at 25 he enlisted in the military.
He served from October 1944 to May 1946. He was part of the Battery C 659th field artillery division. He was in the Battle of the Bulge, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.
Warren said one of his most memorable assignments came after the conclusion of World War II. He was assigned to guard 350,000 German prisoners of war after WWII.
He and his wife Marjorie now reside in Warsaw. They had two daughters and one son, and they’re the proud great-grandparents of six children.
Commissioner Bob Conley said Warren was in his barbershop recently. Conley was planning to award Warren the Veteran of the Month award next month, but Maron beat him to it.
Congratulations to Harry Warren.
