indiana-legislationIndiana attorney general Greg Zoeller and Indiana senator Jim Merritt announced new legislation at the statehouse this morning that is intended to help protect Hoosiers from online hackers and data breaches.

The proposed law will require companies to improve data protection and dispose of customers’ information more frequently. With major data breaches nationwide from companies such as Staples, Target, Home Depot and Sony, more than 100 million Americans have been impacted, many having their credit card and personal information stolen.

Zoeller said he believes “it’s clear that our current law is not adequate and we need to take action to be protecting our consumers.” Already this year, his office has received reports of 375 data breaches and more than 1,300 individual cases of identity theft.
