Cousins Found Dead In Prison Cell

Cody Cousins PhotoIndiana State Prison Superintendent Ron Neal has issued a media release reporting Cody Cousins died as a result of an apparent suicide. Cousins has ties to the Warsaw area.

Cousins was found unresponsive in his single cell in the Michigan City Orientation Unit during a routine security check at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28. A medical emergency was called when it was determined he had self-inflicted lacerations to his neck and both arms. Attempts by staff to revive Cousins was to no avail. An ambulance was called and he was pronounced dead at approximately 9:20 p.m.

Cousins, 24, was serving a 65-year sentence for murder from Tippecanoe County. His estimated release date was July 22, 2046. He was sentenced for the death of Drew Bolt, a student at Purdue University on Jan. 21. He arrived at the Indiana State Prison on Oct. 23 and was on a unit for new arrivals. (See related story)

The incident is under investigation by the facility’s Internal Affairs Office and the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office. Cousins was transported to Franciscan St. Anthony’s Hospital, Michigan City, awaiting autopsy.
