WARSAW – It was business as usual for the Warsaw girls soccer team Saturday afternoon. The Tigers welcomed in Northern Lakes Conference foe Wawasee and made quick work of the Warriors, winning 6-0.

There was a clear disparity of talent and experience between the two teams and Warsaw used that to its advantage. Warsaw was able to control the tempo from start to finish and keep the ball down on Wawasee’s end of the field for the majority of the game.

“We need to play more soccer,” said Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch. “It’s the 10,000-hour rule. Once you do something long enough, you will become more capable of doing it better. We’re still learning the game.

“Our girls are playing smart for the most part and I know they are playing hard. We just need to play more soccer.”

Warsaw’s experienced shined on senior day in every aspect of the game. Three of Warsaw’s six goals were scored by seniors. Brenna Shipley got the scoring started for Warsaw, knocking in her goal in the opening minutes of the contest. Senior Pam Miller followed suit shortly after.

Junior Liz VanWormer tacked-on the third Tiger goal late in the first half (35′) to give Warsaw the 3-0 halftime advantage. In the second half it was still all Tigers. Senior Brooklyn Jackson scored twice (48′, 78′) while freshman Sydney Wiedeman also found the back of the net (66′). A dominating performance on the pitch by the Tigers was nothing new, but it still did not go unappreciated by the home squad.

“We’re blessed,” said Warsaw head coach Peter Lucht, shortly before his daughter fittingly jumped into his arms. “We have a phenomenal group of girls here and it was great to see them earn a team win today. They all work hard and are all great leaders so it was just good to get the win today. We’re very blessed.”

Hard work and keeping faith has now helped Warsaw climb to an 11-1 overall record in 2014 and a 5-1 mark in NLC contests. Wawasee falls to 1-11 and 0-5 in conference play.
