BOURBON – It took New Prairie a little while to get going Friday night.

But once the 4A No. 11 Cougars got going, there was no stopping them in a 48-6 Northern State Conference final at Triton.

New Prairie (5-1, 4-0) were up against it early on, even staring at a near-deficit as Triton used its early momentum to put the heat on. Triton moved the ball on its first two drives, ultimately scoring what it thought was a touchdown by Jeremy Jones on a long run, only for the yellow laundry signaling holding pulled the six off the board. Triton’s drive then stalled on New Prairie’s four-yard-line on a fourth and goal attempt unachieved.

The Cougars then embarked on a nine-play, 96-yard drive capped by a 24-yard touchdown run by Drake Dierdorf. The score held until the second quarter, where New Prairie began to take over.

Dierdorf added a second touchdown run at the 5:45 mark and Nick Brassell shook off four tacklers on what looked to be a busted play, running 53 yards to push the lead to 21-0.

The Trojans, who dropped to 1-5 overall with their fifth straight loss, scored on a touchdown run by Jones in the third period.

Jones led the Triton offense with 15 carries for 54 yards.

New Prairie, which beat the Trojans 62-0 last season, piled up 427 yards rushing to out gain the hosts by a 457-160 total.

Triton will look for its first conference win at LaVille next Friday night.
