To achieve long lasting success in a career or business we must make sure it starts at home first.
By now, many of you have heard about two star NFL players in the news for something other than their athletic ability – Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson. I am not going into detail or declaring guilt or innocence for either of these men. That is not the point of this week’s article. The point is so much can be lost personally and professionally if our personal life is not what it should be.

I am not talking about being perfect – that’s just not possible. We all know of athletes, celebrities and business owners who are revered and even idolized for the apparent success they have achieved. They can make millions of dollars and do great things for the community or even the world. They have great influence on thousands and maybe even millions of people. What people deem as success in business cannot be determined by the size of someone’s bank account, community impact or even the amount of influence they may have in the world.

No amount of money, fame and even the giving of millions of dollars to worthwhile causes is a barometer of true business success. How do we know if someone is really successful in their career or business? The answer is quite simple – ask their spouse (or family). Would what they say match the public’s perception.

There is most certainly a strong connection between someone’s home life and professional life. Ask Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson right now how their business, professional and financial life may crumble into ruins. More important than all these is their relationships with their spouse and children. You cannot separate success in your home from success at your work. “What good is it for a man to gain the world, yet lose his soul?”

The long-term success of your business or career can never rise above the level of success in your home. How many people experience complete business and financial ruin because their marriage and family were neglected? I am sure you all know of once prominent business people in your local area who have lost it all due to the failure in their own family life. Everything ‘looked’ wonderful on the outside, but behind the scenes everything was really falling apart at the seams. The success they achieved in their business was fleeting and just a flash in the pan.

I am certainly not saying anyone has to have the perfect marriage and family life – it is not possible. Perfection is not the point. The point is to give as much attention to your marriage and family as your business – make it a priority. Would your spouse or family honestly call your personal life a success? Do you want your business or career success to be just a flash in the pan, or one that lasts for generations? If it’s not working at home – it’s not working in business.
