Gas prices over the holiday weekend gave travelers a welcome, albeit surprising break by dropping. The national average, according to GasBuddy.com, is now at $3.64 – although some surrounding areas are selling regular unleaded for even less.

The current national average is about 16 cents less than it was this same time last hear, but it is still the third highest price on record for the holiday weekend. Only 2008 and 2011 gas prices were higher, but it appears prices at the pump will stay below the previously forecast amounts of as much as $5 per gallon. The national average peaked in April at $3.91 per gallon.

If you’re looking for the best prices on regular unleaded gasoline, you’ll need to travel out of Warsaw where the best price is $3.66 a gallon. Best pricing is found to the east. Larwill has gasoline for $3.58 a gallon and many Fort Wayne stations are touting it as just $3.57.

Traveling west or south will net you only a small savings. Plymouth is advertising regular unleaded at $3.63 and North Manchester is at $3.65.
