Warsaw Police Det. Steve Adang tells StaceyPageOnline.com today that the investigation into a May 18 bar fight is continuing.

Joe G. Swanson

Garrett Joe Swanson, 28, of Warsaw, has preliminarily been charged with class B felony aggravated battery. Swanson was set to appear in Kosciusko County Superior Court 1 at 8:30 a.m. Thursday for an initial hearing but the prosecutor’s office now says through his attorney, Brad Voelz, Swanson has waived his initial hearing.

Swanson’s next court date is June 11 when he will have a status conference. A pretrial hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26.

According to Warsaw Police, Nicholas Phillips, 28, suffered facial and head injuries after being struck by Swanson, 28, in an early Friday morning fight outside of Rex’s Rendezvous. Phillips remains in the ICU at Lutheran Hospital.

Det. Adang says he is still in the process of interviewing witnesses and, because of Phillips’ condition, has been unable to interview him. He does tell StaceyPageOnline.com that ” … there’s a lot more to this story, and if (Phillips) dies, that certainly changes the case.”

Swanson turned himself into police custody at 4:20 p.m. Friday. He has been charged with aggravated battery and police say that is due to his background in mixed martial arts fighting. His bond was set at $10,000.

Det. Adang asks that anyone with credible information on the case contact him at the WPD at 574-372-9515.
