Elkhart County authorities are investigating a case of home improvement fraud that targeted an elderly Nappanee woman for nearly $10,000.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Capt. James Bradberry says that on April 28, a deputy was called to the woman’s home after two subjects posing as good Samaritans stopped by her home and said they noticed part of her roof coming loose. The woman agreed to allow them to make the repairs. The  subjects later presented the woman with a bill for over $5,700 for their work.

Despite the woman’s insistence she could not pay them, the men returned later and claimed they did more work on the roof. They gave her a second bill for $2,300. After agreeing to a reduced amount, the men left in a gray pickup truck and were simply described as both males, one older and one younger.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information on these subjects to please contact the department at 574-533-4151.
