Harry P. Chalk, 84, of Columbia City, died at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014 at his home.

He was born August 1, 1930 in Champaign, Ill., a son of Joseph and Lena (McLaughlin) Chalk. As a young boy, his family moved to Sidney, where he completed his education.

On Aug. 9, 1948, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean War from which he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged August 10, 1954

On July 2, 1955, he was united in marriage to LaVonne L. Miller. They made their home rural North Manchester. In 1995 they moved to Columbia City.

He was employed at Syracuse – Regent Mobile Homes for 14 years and retired from Whitley Manufacturing with 16 years of service.

His memberships include St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, American Legion Post No. 98 and South Whitley V.F.W.

Surviving relatives include his wife, LaVonne; six children, Andrew (Twyla) Chalk of Mansfield, Ohio, Deborah (Jerry Egolf) Chalk of North Manchester, Joseph (Jill) Chalk of Warsaw, Mark (Pat) Chalk of Fort Wayne, Bryan (Kay) Chalk of Plymouth and Deanna (Michael) Lahmon of Fort Wayne; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Pat Martin of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Ted and Francis; and three sisters, Clara Michael, Mary Rose Tackwell and Helen Boyer.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 South Line Street, Columbia City, with visitation after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. The visitation will also be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with a Prayer Service at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The burial will be in Catholic Cemetery with military honors presented by members of the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.

Preferred memorials are to St. Paul of the Cross or Parkview Hospice.
