Lawrence “Bud” SawyerLawrence “Bud” Sawyer, 91, of Milford, Ind., died at 7:50 p.m., Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at his residence.

He was born March 25, 1923, in Kosciusko County to Ransom and Edith (Stuckman) Sawyer. He married Ruby L. Holloway Dec. 6, 1944, in Nappanee. She preceded him in death Nov. 29, 2011.

Mr. Sawyer was a WWII Army Veteran. He was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. He received both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star awards. Mr. Sawyer served as a guard at Dachau when the prisoners were liberated. He also survived a plane crash in Oregon.

He had been a part of Sawyer Excavating since 1946. He was a member of Nappanee Church of the Brethren. Bud enjoyed snowmobiling, traveling, camping, flying, and hunting. For their 50th wedding anniversary, he and Ruby spent six weeks in Alaska.

He is survived by daughters: Connie (Steve) Schermerhorn, New Paris, Roxann (Tom) Monhaut, Goshen; son: Kent (Ann) Sawyer, Milford; companion: Donna Hillary; grandchildren: Matthew Monhaut, Kristy (Jon) Ambrosen, Mandie (Casey) Whitney, Luke Sawyer; great grandsons, Hunter Ambrosen and Eli Whitney.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister: Frieda Elliott.

Family and friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee and for one hour prior to the funeral service which will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Nappanee Church of the Brethren. Rev. Byrl Shaver will officiate and burial will be in Union Center Cemetery with Military Graveside rites by Nappanee American Legion.
