Syracuse Library Offers Programs and Prizes for Reading This Summer

The kick-off for the children’s summer reading program, Fizz, Boom, Read at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, Ronald McDonald is presenting a magic act in the library meeting room. Information and signup for participation in the summer reading program is available following the show.

The first Tea Party with Miss Gisela will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 5. This is a popular program, so parents are encouraged to check with the children’s department about attendance limitations. Fantastic Films start at 10 a.m. Friday, June 13.

The Children’s Book Club continues to meet through the summer. Children from kindergarten to fifth grade are welcome to join an evening of reading, games, and snacks. Meets Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 10.

The final summer reading event is a bus trip to Science Central in Fort Wayne. Children must read for five weeks in the program to qualify for them self and an escorting adult to attend. Any child up through sixth grade is welcome to participate in the prizes and activities of the summer reading program.

Young Adults Are Guaranteed a New Book

Young people going into sixth to twelfth grade are offered a chance to choose a new book as an incentive for reading for fun this summer. Teens that signup and read books from the Syracuse Library qualify for weekly prize drawings and to receive the book. The qualifying number of pages for the book is one thousand, which is easy for the fast readers and a can-do for slower readers.

The first Teen Time will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 11. The Kinetic Snake chain reaction and a periodic elements card game will take up the hour. Each Wednesday during Teen Time is the day for the weekly prize drawings.

One Book, One Hour Adult Book Club Meets

The book club is reading the first person narrative of a boy as he grows up with a genetic defect that caused his facial features to be deformed. Wonder, by R.J. Palacio was written for a children’s audience but is so empathetic in describing the boy’s experience that adult readers find the story interesting. Decaf and tea are served at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11. The meeting is open for any adult to join in a friendly discussion.
