897_0000174996Dora Belle Carroll, 96, former resident of South Whitley, passed away at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, at The Oaks where she had resided since October 2013.

She was born April 7, 1918, in Whitley County, to Christian John Lewis Dreyer and Sylvia Belle (Arnett) Dreyer. She spent her formative years in Washington Township where she graduated from Washington Center High School. She earned her bachelors from Manchester College and masters in teaching from University of St. Francis, Fort Wayne. While serving in the U.S. Navy, she met her husband, a U.S. Marine, Charles M. Carroll, Jr. They wed Dec. 24, 1945. They made their home in Oakland, Calif. In 1948, they moved to Washington Township and in 1953 to South Whitley. Mr. Carroll preceded her in death.

A career long teacher, she taught elementary school at Columbia Township, Washington Center and South Whitley. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her daughter: Marcia A. (Phillip) Dierks, South Whitley; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband: a son: David L. Carroll: a grandson; and two sisters: Magdeline Bowerman and Melba Smith.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Smith and Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the funeral home.
