Sponseller Shines In Sectional

logo2PLYMOUTH – Nolan Sponseller turned in a series of strong performances Thursday night for the Tippecanoe Valley track team.

Senior Sponseller led the way as the Vikings turned in a strong effort to place third in the Plymouth Sectional.

Sponseller placed second in both the 200 and 400 to advance on to the South Bend St. Joseph Regional next Thursday. Sponseller clocked in at 23.74 in the 200 and 52.68 in the 400.

The top four finishers in each sectional event at Plymouth Thursday night move on to regional competition next week in South Bend.

Host Plymouth won the sectional team title, edging out Rochester 115-113. Tippecanoe Valley was third with 70 points. Triton finished in eighth place with 50 points.

Sponseller was also a part of a pair of regional qualifying relay teams for the Vikings. He teamed with Neil Clampitt, Brandon Murphy and Michael Thacker to place second in the 4 X 100 relay event in 45.38. The team of Sponseller, Murphy, Jared Mikel and Clampitt was third in the 4 X 400 relay race in a time of 3:39.84.

The Vikings had a host of athletes earn top four sectional finishes.

The duo of Clampitt and Thacker placed third and fourth respectively in the finals of 100-meter dash in 11.53 and 11.62.  Clampitt was also third in the 800  in 2:08.94 and fourth in the long jump with a top jump of 19-10 1/2. Thacker finished in fourth place in the finals of the 200 in 24.19.

Triton had four athletes earn top four finishes and regional spots.

Jeremy Jones placed third in the 200 for the Trojans with a time of 24.15. Derek Johnston was third in the 1,600 in 4:55.10 and Dillon Meadway third in the 300 hurdles in 43.20 for Triton.  Jessie Burkholder was third in the pole vault for the Trojans as he cleared 11-0.
