AKRON – The Whitko boys track team got plenty of strong showings Thursday night in the Three Rivers Conference Meet.
The Wildcats scored 93.5 points to sit in third place in the eight-team meet contested at Tippecanoe Valley High School.
Rochester leads the team standings with 109 points with the pole vault competition to be finished tonight at Northfield High School. Manchester is in second place currently with 101 points.
Alex Morales earned an individual title Thursday night to lead the Wildcats, who have won the TRC Meet each of the last two years. Morales hit the finish line first in the finals of the 300 hurdles in a winning time of 42.80.
Nolan Sponseller had a big night for the host Vikings, who are in sixth place with 55.5 points. Sponseller claimed the conference title in the 400 with a top time of 52.51.
Sponseller also teamed with Neil Clampitt, Michael Thacker and Brandon Murphy to win the 4 X 100 relay event in a top time of 45.40. He was also second in the 200 in 24.03.
Brady Herendeen played a big role for Whitko. He was third in the 200 (24.29) and in the long jump (18-8) and teamed with Will Bumbaugh, Morales and Dillon Patrick to earn a second place finish in the 4 X 100 relay in a time of 46.13.
Bumbaugh was fifth in the 100 in 12.20 and also fifth in the 200 in 24.99 for the Wildcats. Daniel Kirkham placed fifth in the 800 for Whitko in 2:15.67.
Walker Hobbs earned a third place finish in the shot put for Whitko with a throw of 46-9 1/4. Zach Hewitt was second in the discus for the Wildcats with a top effort of 134-06.
Thacker placed third in the 100 meter dash finals for Valley in 12.00. Clampitt was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-6 1/4 for the Vikings.
The team standings show Wabash in fourth place currently with 73 points. Northfield is fifth with 70, followed by Valley (55.5), North Miami (42) and Southwood (35).
Whitko and Tippecanoe Valley will be back in action next week with sectional competition on Thursday night. The Wildcats will take part in the Fort Wayne Wayne Sectional, while the Vikings will travel to Plymouth.
