NAPPANEE – Not a bad way to close out the regular season. The Wawasee boys track team notched two more wins Wednesday night, beating host NorthWood, 86.33-45.66, and besting Elkhart Memorial, 78-54, to finish the Northern Lakes Conference round robin 6-1.
Wawasee got there with three individual wins from Clayton Cook and two field victories by JJ Gilmer, part of a big day altogether.
Cook won the 200 dash (22.29) and then claimed both the 110 hurdles (14.05) and 300 hurdles (41.75) while also anchoring the 4×100 relay with Tyler Courter, Jake Hutchinson and Gilmer to a 44.31 win, which happened to be the fifth-fastest relay time in Wawasee history. The Warriors set the school mark in the 4×100 relay last Thursday against Warsaw at 43.81.
Gilmer cleared 6-4 in the high jump and 20-04 in the long jump for honors in both events. Kevin Carpenter added a third field event win with a 10-6 clearance in pole vault.
Adam Doll added a 10:13.30 finish in the two-mile and Stori Bright a 52.87 top time in the 400-meter dash to conclude Wawasee’s glory at NorthWood.
In JV races, Erik Diaz posted the top 800-meter time at 2:17.08 while Jacob Tucco ran a 5:02-flat to win the one-mile.
“It was a great effort by our athletes to close out the season with a couple of wins,” said Wawasee head coach Scott Lancaster. “There were many who contributed when it counted for us.”
Without the ability to compete outside the conference this year due to weather and circumstance, Wawasee finished its regular season with the 6-1 mark and second in the NLC to Warsaw, which ran the table at 7-0 for the conference regular season crown.
Wawasee will see if it can knock Warsaw off the NLC mantle Tuesday when the conference will come together for the NLC Championships at Warsaw, run congruently with the girls track team championships. Warsaw’s girls were also 7-0 in the NLC.
