Verlin Allen ‘Al’ Young, 83, of North Webster, Ind., passed away at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at his home.
He was born on June 14, 1931, in Huntington, Ind., to Arthur C. and Priscilla May (Burnworth) Young. He graduated in 1949 from Huntington High School and was married on Oct. 23, 1949, in Huntington to Peggy Joyce Welker who survives.
He retired from K-Mart Corp. in Fort Wayne, Ind., after 42 years of service and served in the National Guard. He formerly served as department director for the Civil Defense in Huntington; served on the City Council in Huntington; Huntington City Sheriff’s Reserve; Huntington County Sherriff’s Reserve; was one of the first registered EMTs in Huntington County; and drove for the North Webster EMS for a short time in the early 1990’s. He moved to North Webster in 1990 from Huntington where he had lived all of his life except for 1 year when he lived in Elkhart, Ind. He was a member of the North Webster United Methodist Church and Sons of the American Legion Post 253 in North Webster. He was also a former member of the Lakeland Kiwanis in North Webster.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters: Karen (Bruce) Street, Huntington; Kristine Young, Indianapolis, Ind.; son: Kent (Janelle) Young, Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a half-brother: Meredith Wamsley, Syracuse, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Charlotte Schultz and Evelyn Walker.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Owen Family Funeral Home, SR 13 and CR 500N, North Webster. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the United Methodist Church, 7822 E. Epworth Forest Road, North Webster, with Associate Pastor Robert Dailey of the church officiating. Burial will follow in Mock Addition to the North Webster Cemetery.
