l_banner_horseheadELKHART – The man who guided Elkhart Memorial to its best boys basketball season in school history is done as coach.

Mark Barnhizer, the Crimson Chargers’ coach for the last eight years, has resigned.

Barnhizer, who will remain a health teacher at North Side Middle School in Elkhart, said that it was time for a change for himself and for the program. He also noted that he would like to coach again in the future.

The 57-year old Barnhizer posted a 103-75 record at EMHS with two sectional championships and one regional title. His 2011-12 team, led by star guards Todd Johnson and Markese McGuire, went 24-2 for the best mark in the 42-year history of the school. The team won Northern Lakes Conference, sectional and regional titles before losing 62-59 to Carmel in the Class 4-A Northern Semistate.

Barnhizer tutored four Division I players during his tenure at Memorial in Johnson, McGuire, Karvel Anderson and Michael Kibiloski.

The Crimson Chargers have finished 8-13 each of the last two seasons. Memorial posted a 4-3 mark in the NLC during the 2013-14 campaign.

Barnhizer has coached for a total of 30 seasons with an overall record of 384-279. Previous coaching stops included at Perry Meridian, Westfield, Cloverdale and Eastern at Bloomfield.

Barnhizer was a high school standout at tiny Lapel High School, where he scored 1,830 points. He played one year at Purdue before transferring to Auburn.

Barnhizer’s resignation leaves both Elkhart schools without boys basketball coaches. Troy Noble resigned March 7 as the head coach at Elkhart Central.
