WINONA LAKE – The Grace College baseball team suffered a pair of losses at home to Spring Arbor in Crossroads League play on Saturday.

The Lancers (9-24; 8-17 Crossroads League) lost a pitchers’ duel in the opener, 2-1, before falling 10-0 in the second game.

The Cougars (23-11; 15-5 CL) took the first lead of the opener with single runs in the second and third innings.

Grace cut that lead in half during the fourth. Aaron Christenberry led off the inning with a single, and Brook Vosler sacrificed him to second base. CJ Swartz then singled to right field to send Christenberry around the basepaths. Coach Bill Barr waved Christenberry to charge for home, and the decision paid off as the freshman scored.

Swartz did his job to keep Grace in contention from the mound, limiting Spring Arbor to two runs in a complete-game effort. He held the Cougars to five hits and two walks, striking out three batters in an impressive performance. Swartz also led Grace from the plate, going 2-for-3.

Unfortunately for the Lancers, Grace’s bats were quieted to five hits. The Lancers managed just one baserunner over the final three innings.

The Lancers did not have much success in reigning in Spring Arbor’s bats during the second game, however. The Cougars tallied 10 runs on 11 hits, including five runs in the third inning to speed away from Grace.

Offensively, Grace was stifled into three hits for the game – one apiece from Swartz, Tyler Weber and Steven Hovermale.

Grace had one of its best chances to score in the first with runners on second and third, but the team came up empty.

Jason Stevens, Dellos Schabel and Wesley Gensch pitched scoreless innings of relief for Grace.

The Lancers have three doubleheaders next week. Grace travels to Bethel on Tuesday before hosting Bethel on Thursday and Huntington on Saturday.
