A pair of area high school girls basketball coaches have been honored by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Named by their coaching peers as IBCA Coaches of the Year for District 1 are Kristi Kaniewski Ulrich of Penn and Skeeter Heath of LaPorte.

Ulrich guided her Kingsmen to a 25-2 mark during the 2013-14 season, which culminated with a Class 4-A state runner-up finish. Ulrich is 108-14 in her five seasons at Penn, also including a state runner-up finish in 2011.

Ulrich, who played at Mishawaka High School and Bethel College, has also been chosen to coach the Junior All-Star team this summer.

Heath directed the Slicers to a 20-3 record and a Duneland Athletic Conference championship this past season. He announced his resignation following the conclusion of the 2013-14 campaign, his 11th as coach of the Slicers.
