National Library Week Celebrations
National Library Week is a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.
The Syracuse Library is offering some fun rewards for patrons that visit the library the week of April 14-19. Each day, children who wear a mustache will get 50 cents deducted from their overdue fines.
People visiting the adult/young adult department can pick up a free ticket to attend the 2014 Murder Mystery at the Library. The library is planning the event for a date in the summer at which time any remaining tickets will go on sale. The staff will not be collecting fines on overdue items returned for amnesty during National Library Week. Books, movies and CDs that are checked-out and not returned to the library will not be assessed late fees, a big benefit for the forgetful.
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country. The community is invited to come in to meet the staff and visit different areas of the library. Programming is offered during the week and exemplifies some interactive learning offered for variety of ages. Programs start on Monday and end on Saturday.
Story Times Have Three More Weeks
Preschool age children can practice pre-literacy skills at 10:30 a.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. With songs, stories and tea, children will have too much fun to know they are learning. The last week in the session is April 29. Registration is not required.
Teens to Discuss a Series of Unfortunate Events
Young people should find a character from the first three books by Lemony Snickett to join a round table discussion. Young adults are invited to a play-acting party at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 15. Those that attend can choose a pin of the Series of Unfortunate Events highlights. Teens that come can expect to be fed and to have a safe place for at least an hour, if the wind doesn’t come up and the train stays on the tracks.
Turn Down a Craving
Angie Hernandez is presenting an interesting program about weight loss and healthy living. Ms. Hernandez is hypnotherapist and she is presenting a safe group session to address one food or beverage craving. The group is convening in the meeting room from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday April 16. A special reward for coming to the library during National Library Week is that a door prize will be awarded at the end of the evening.
Librarians Leave Early
Happy coincidences are so much fun. Friday is Good Friday and the library staff will be leaving work early. Sorry to say, but, this means the library will be closing at 3 p.m. on April 18.
String Theory
More good things continue on Saturday. String Theory is meeting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and anyone that wants to work on a crocheted, knitted or material project is welcome to attend. A special feature will be the viewing of several items from the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum. Call the library with questions at 574-457-3022
