Doris May ‘Sue’ Gilbert, 85, of Syracuse, Ind., passed away at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at Millers Merry Manor in Syracuse.
She was born on Aug. 13, 1929, in Syracuse, to Martin Franklin and Edith Leora (Wogoman) Hoover. She attended Syracuse High School and was married on Aug. 23, 1952, to Jimmie Lee Gilbert who preceded her in death June 3, 2007.
She lived most of her life in Syracuse except for a brief time in Florida, North Dakota and Georgia. She was homemaker, formerly worked at Syracuse Rubber Company and assisted her husband building custom cabinets. She attended the Church of the Brethren in North Webster and was a former member of the Church of Brethren in Syracuse
She is survived by a son: Gary Allen (Donna) Gilbert, Pooler, Ga.; three grandchildren: Michael, Allen and Melanie; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister: Louise Wise, Syracuse;
two bothers: Karl (Evelyn) Hoover, Morganton, N.C.; and Nelson Hoover, New Paris, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter: Donna Sue Herman; granddaughter; Mary Sue Gilbert; two sisters: Ronda Hoover and Geneva Cripe; and two brothers: Ray Hoover and Junior Hoover.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Wyman of the church officiating. Burial will follow in the Syracuse Cemetery.
