john-zimmerman-obituaryJohn P. Zimmerman, 77, of Akron, Ind., 10:25 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, 2104, at his residence surrounded by his family after being homebound for the last 2 weeks.

He was born March 16, 1937, in Rochester, Ind., to Robert Byron Zimmerman and Sarah ‘Sally’ Chamberlin. On Dec. 28, 1957, in Akron, he was married to Marvus A. Hively at the United Methodist Church. She survives.

He worked as a distributor for Sutter Dairy, Borden’s Milk, and Dean’s Milk where he worked for 19 years. He also worked for Hively’s Manufacturing in sales and most recently he was a contractor for Clean Burn working in sales and service for waste oil furnaces until April of 2013 where he worked for 19 years. He was a member of the Akron United Methodist Church. He had been a member of the Akron Chamber of Commerce and had served on the Akron Town Board. He also had been a Henry Township Volunteer fireman for over 25 years. He enjoyed visiting with friends at the Mini Mart as well as the restaurant. He loved fishing, deer hunting and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; daughters: Pamela (Brian) Romine, Mentone, Ind.;
Debra (Arik) Lee, Rochester, Ind.; grandchildren: Brittany (Nate) Mills, Brice Romine and Tanner Lee; sisters: Sandra Witham, Palestine, Ind.; Bonnie (Ralph) Clupper, Rochester; half-sister: Cathy (David) Ginther, Rochester; half-brother: Joe Bob Zimmerman, Akron; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; infant grandchild: Nathan and Darin Lee; brother: David Zimmerman.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at the funeral home with Pastor David Eaton officiating. Burial will be held in Akron Cemetery, Akron.
