A Syracuse man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly strangling a woman he resides with in front of her children.

According to the affidavit filed with the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office, on March 13, Ryan V. Smythe, 24, of Syracuse, entered into an argument with the woman at their home while in the children’s bedroom. During the argument, Smythe became angry and threw the children’s basketball goal and then pinned the woman against one of the children’s beds as he strangled her until she became unconscious.

When the woman regained consciousness, the children were reportedly jumping on her and Smythe had taken her phone away so that she could not call anyone. Both of the children witnessed the battery to the woman and Shane Bucher of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department noted the woman had redness on her neck.

Smythe informed Bucher that he had punched the door to the children’s bedroom causing the goal to be knocked over. He was arrested for battery causing serious bodily injury and was booked with a $5,000 surety bond.
