INDIANAPOLIS – A pair of prep girls basketball coaches with area ties will lead the Indiana All-Star teams this summer.
The IBCA has announced that Norwell coach Eric Thornton will direct the Senior All-Star team and Penn coach Kristi Kaniewski Ulrich will guid the Junior All-Star squad.
Thornton, a 1987 graduate of Churubusco High School, began his coaching career as a boys basketball assistant coach at Warsaw in 1991-92. Thornton then served as a girls basketball assistant coach at Plymouth from 1992-97.
Thornton, who served as the Junior All-Star coach in 2012, is 250-136 in his 17 seasons at Norwell. His team advanced to the Class 3-A semi state this season.
Kaniewski has compiled a 108-14 mark in her five seasons as the coach of the Kingsmen. She served as an assistant coach at Mishawaka High School and at Penn before being named head coaching 2009. Kaniewski is a 1999 Mishawaka High School grad and went on to play at Bethel College, where she helped the Pilots win a pair of national championships.
Kaniewski has coached Penn to a pair of Class 4-A state runner-up finishes in 2011 and 2014.
The assistant coaches for the Senior All-Stars will be Amy Brauman of Brownsburg and Gretchen Miles of Washington. The assistants for the Junior team will be Donna Keck of Noblesville and Terry Rademacher of Borden.
The Junior All-Star team will play a pair of games versus Kentucky on June 6 at Scecina High School in Indianapolis and June 7 in Lexington. The squad will also play two exhibition games against the Indiana Senior team will those dates and locations still to be determined.
The Senior All-Star team will play Kentucky in the annual two-game series on June 13 in Lexington and June 14 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
