TERRE HAUTE – Ashley Campbell picked a pretty good time to have a record-setting performance Saturday.

The Oregon-Davis senior star lit up the scoreboard in record-setting fashion to lead her top-ranked team to a girls basketball state championship.

Campbell tossed in a record 35 points as the No. 1 Bobcats outscored No. 4 Vincennes Rivet 69-64 in the Class 1-A state title tilt in the Hulman Center.

Campbell’s prolific scoring effort broke the old Class 1-A state championship game record of 28 points set by Brittany Schoen of South Central in 2006.

The Bobcats blazed to leads of 9-0 and 15-2 to open the contest with their signature pressing and up tempo attack. Oregon-Davis, which entered the game second in the state in scoring at 75.9 points-per-game, led 27-9 after the opening period of play.

Senior guard Campbell, OD’s top scorer at 20.5 ppg., netted 23 in the opening half as the Bobcats built a 44-29 lead at intermission. She hit 7-8 field goals, including both of her 3-point attempts, and went 7-8 from the free throw line in the opening half.

The Bobcats, who ranked first in the state in average winning margin at 35.5 ppg., led 58-46 after the third quarter. Rivet got within five in the final frame, but Campbell hit 8-9 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the title.

Cambell, one of four senior starters for coach Terry Minix, hit 9-14 field goals and 15-17 free throws in her sensational effort.

Senior Jessica Avarone scored 16 points and hit 4-6 on 3-pointers for the Bobcats. Senior Haley Collings had eight points, senior Alicia McIntosh seven and sophomore Lexi Minix three.

Oregon-Davis finished 22-43 overall from the field, including 7-12 on 3-pointers, and hit 18-21 free throws.

The Bobcats, who finish the season at 23-2, capture the program’s second state title. Oregon-Davis also won the state championship in 2007.

Sophomore Kelsey Ivers tallied 23 points and senior Lauren Herman 21 to lead Rivet.

The Patriots, who won a state title in 2011, were making their fifth appearance in the championship game in the last six years.

Rivet shot 23-45 overall from the field, including 3-8 on 3-pointers, and went 15-18 from the line. The Patriots finished the season at 22-5.
