Margaret E. Payne, 82, formerly of North Webster, Ind., and Syracuse, Ind., passed away Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Riverside Village in Elkhart, Ind., surrounded by her family.

She was born Oct. 24, 1931, in Andrews, N.C., to Fletcher and Virginia Marsh.

She fought a long and courageous battle as her health declined, but she never lost her sense of humor.

Margaret graduated from Syracuse High School in 1949 and retired from Syracuse Rubber Company. Family gatherings were her greatest joy. She also enjoyed music, gardening and garage sales, and she loved to dance. She was feisty, but also very sweet and loving.

Marge is survived by her children: Vicki (Vince) Hamada, Mike Smith, Roger (Joannie) Smith, Doug Smith, and Teresa (Erik) Bartman; her ex-husband and friend: Donald Smith; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband: David L. Payne; her parents; and her sister: Betty Bryan.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Eastlund Funeral Home in Syracuse.
