Norma Jean SchummNorma Jean Schumm, 88, of Syracuse, Ind., passed away at 1 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Millers Merry Manor in Syracuse. She was born on August 3, 1925 in Willshire, OH to David F. & Florene M. (Dudgeon) Carr.

She grew up in Willshire & graduated in 1943 from Willshire High School. She was married on June 2, 1946 in Willshire, Ohio to Henry L. “ Hank” Schumm who preceded her on August 6, 2005. She moved to Syracuse in 1969 from Willshire, formerly worked at General Electric in Fort Wayne, IN, managed the Willshire, OH Bureau of Motor Vehicles, managed the Tasty Freeze in Willshire, and worked at Three Flags Drive Inn in Syracuse.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Willshire and attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse. She was a 68 year member of the Order of Eastern Star Bethlehem Chapter #25 in Willshire, where she and her husband served as Worthy Matron & Worthy Patron multiple times. In 1967 she was appointed by the State of Ohio as Deputy Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star.

Norma Schumm 2Family was the center of Norma’s world and she spent much of her time taking care of family members. After moving to Syracuse her home was bursting at the seams with weekend visitors. Sunday dinners of fried chicken, mashed potatoes & jello were the family’s favorites! She also enjoyed playing euchre and was a member of the bunko club in Syracuse. Norma & Henry were loyal Chicago Cub fans and general sports enthusiasts.

She was the loving mother and grandmother of two daughters: Toby (Jerry) Oswald of Melbourne Beach, Fla., and Tammy Schumm of Burlington, Ky.; two sons: Greg (Mary) Schumm of St. Mary’s, Ohio, and Kip (Pam) Schumm of Syracuse; six grandchildren: Jeremy (Michelle) Schumm, Jason (Kate) Schumm, Joel (Cassie) Schumm, Amanda (Joe King) Oswald Grundel, Katrina (Chris) Berg, and Kristin (fiancé, Matt Stetz) Schumm

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother: Carl “Jack” Carr.

Visitation will be from 2–4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, IN. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 in the funeral home with Pastor Brad Cox of the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel officiating. Burial will follow in the Syracuse Cemetery.
