haroldhornHarold E. Horn, 94, of Millers Merry Manor of Warsaw, Ind. and formerly of Mentone, Indiana, passed away at 10:20 pm, Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Kosciusko Community Hospital of Warsaw, Indiana.

Harold was born Feb. 17, 1920 in Fulton County, Indiana to Fred A. and Anna Lavera (Stockberger) Horn. He married Velma F. Ailer, who survives, on June 28, 1941 in Hamlet, Ind.

Harold worked at Manwaring Poultry Farm for 45 years. He was a 1938 graduate of Mentone High School. In WWII he was a Sgt. in the 106th Infantry Division and 423rd Regiment. He was on the battle lines on Dec. 16, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. His Regiment as well as the 422nd were captured. He evaded capture and went on to participate in 3 more campaigns.

He was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for Heroism during the sinking of the troop ship USS Coolidge in the Pacific. He attended the Riverview Community Church of Tippecanoe and a past member of the Mentone Masonic Lodge. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Sebring, Florida. He also loved carpentry, woodworking, telling stories, as well as being a die-hard Chicago Cubs fans.

Surviving Harold is his wife; daughter: Vicki (Tim) Mikel of Mentone; sons: Freddie W.  (Debbie) Horn of Carterville, Ga. and Mickey (Janice) Horn, of Macy, Ind.; 5 Grandchildren; 6 Great Grandchildren, a Great Great Grandson; 2 Step Grandchildren; 7 Step Great Grandchildren; Sisters: Leota Holloway, of Talma, Ind.; Shirley (Richard) Wine of  Warsaw; Donna Baker of Warsaw; Beverly Sue Murphy of Akron.

Preceding Harold in death is infant Daughter: Connie, Grandson: Todd Horn, three sisters, four brothers.

Memorial services are 2:00 pm, Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at King Memorial Home 101 North Tucker Street Mentone, Ind., Rev. Rodney Ruberg presiding. Burial is at Mentone Cemetery, Mentone, Indiana where graveside military rites will be preformed by the American Legion and the VFW of Warsaw.
