Robert G. “Bob” Showalter, 84, of Leesburg, Ind., and Yalaha, Fla., passed away on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at his winter home in Florida.
He was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Wilbur H. “Nick”and Helen (Guild) Showalter.
He graduated in 1947 from Marion High School, in 1952 from Ball State in Muncie, Ind., with his Bachelor’s Degree and in 1955 from Ball State with his Master’s Degree. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War.
He retired in 1998 as Professor Emeritus from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., after 33 years in the Audiology and Speech Science Department where he was a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. He formerly worked for 8 years at Peru Community School Corporation in Indiana.
He retired to Lake Tippecanoe in 1998 from West Lafayette, Ind. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in North Webster, Ind., and Morrison United Methodist Church in Leesburg, Fla.
He is survived by his wife: Marietta Showalter; daughters: Susan Marie Thurgood, Centennial, Colo.; and Julia Ellen (Larry) Ott, Lafayette, Ind.; sons: Daniel Guild (Kimberly) Showalter, Columbus, Ind.; and Robert “Andy” Showalter, Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren; sisters: Helen Hewitt, Marion, Ind.; and Margaret Keith, Tallahassee, Fla.; and a brother: Richard (“Bunny”) Showalter, Grand Ledge, Mich.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at the North Webster United Methodist Church, 7822 E. Epworth Forest Rd., North Webster, with Senior Pastor David Smitley of the church officiating.
