H. James “Jim” Atwood, 70, of Syracuse, Ind., passed away at 3:36 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind.
He was born June 22, 1943, in Omaha, Neb., to Herbert C. and Margot (Knudsen) Atwood.
He graduated in 1961 from Natrona County High School in Casper, Wyo., received his Associate of Arts Degree from Casper College and Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Wyoming. He was a United States Marine Veteran and was married in Indianapolis to M. Lynn Weisenfluh, who survives.
He formerly lived in Casper, Wyo.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Indianapolis; North Webster, Ind.; and Fort Wayne, Ind., before moving to Syracuse.
He was employed at Alliance Franchise Brands (formerly Signs Now) for 24 years. He was a former golf professional at Casper Golf Club in Casper, assistant golf professional at Wigwam Golf Club in Phoenix, assistant golf professional at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis, golf professional for 14 years at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club in Leesburg, Ind., and two years at Brookwood Golf Club in Buchanan, Mich., before retiring from golf.
He was a member of the North Webster Church of God, American Legion Post 253 in North Webster, Professional Golfers Association, Indiana Golf Association, and Lakeland Kiwanis in North Webster. He enjoyed traveling, music, reading, photography, Indian lore, storytelling around the fire pit, was an avid IU and Cubs fan. He enjoyed golfing with his buddies, spending time at the lake with family, friends and neighbors, and had a huge passion for teaching junior golfers throughout the state. He was a man with many friends and a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior.
Jim is survived by his wife: Lynn Atwood, Syracuse, Ind.; two daughters: Lisa (David) Georges, Hollywood, Fla.; and Jill (Matt) Stahl, Fishers, Ind.; four sons: Jeff (Melissa) Atwood, Leesburg; Brent (Tricia) Atwood and Darin (Michelle) Atwood, both of Fishers, Ind.; and Joshua (Ashley) Atwood, Chicago, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; his mother: Margot Atwood, Denver, Colo.; four sisters: Barb (Frank) Barella, Casper, Wyo.; Kay (Jim) Wagner, Outer Banks, N.C.; Connie (Gene) Meyer, Houston, Texas; and Beda (Ed) Collins, Denver, Colo.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his father: Herbert Atwood; and a sister: Dorothy McChesney.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 13, at North Webster Church of God, 301 N. Main St., North Webster. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the church with Pastor Jeff Boyer of the church officiating. Military services will follow on Saturday from the North Webster American Legion Post 253 and United States Marines presiding.
