Helen Jean Scheffers, 83, formerly of Nappanee, Ind., and Elkhart, Ind., passed away at 7:10 a.m., Friday, June 6, 2014, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Wakarusa, Ind., after an extended illness.

She was born May 7, 1931, in Chicago, Ill., to John and Ruth Wagner. Helen was a graduate of Genoa High School in Genoa, Ill. On Dec. 3, 1954, she married Dwight Eldon Scheffers. He preceded her in death Nov. 5, 1996.

She moved to Nappanee in 2000 from Elkhart. Mrs. Scheffers was a homemaker and had worked for many years at a Toll Road Restaurant. She enjoyed activities at the Elder Haus in Nappanee and traveling. She had been a member of the Nappanee Red hats.

She is survived by her sons: Daniel (Donna) Scheffers, Nappanee; Jack (JoLinda) Scheffers, Middlebury, Ind.; Joe (Theresa) Scheffers, Millersburg, Ind.; daughters: Sandy Fager, Osceola, Ind.; Linda (Harry) Deppe, Elkhart; stepdaughter: Bonnie (Lonnie) Stojan, Dekalb, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson: David Scheffers; a brother: Jack Wagner; and sisters: Carol Crawford and Margaret Wagner.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Rice Cemetery, Hope Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be given to Elder Haus.
