897_0000173411Miriam J. Bishop, 87, a lifelong resident of South Whitley, Ind., passed away at 1:56 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2014, in the emergency room at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, Ind.

She was born March 13, 1927, in South Whitley, Ind., a daughter of Claude H. and Ruth L. (Bair) Herr. She graduated from South Whitley High School in 1945.

On March 14, 1947, she was united in marriage to Jack L. Bishop. Mr. Bishop died June 14, 2005.

She was employed at Kaadt Diabetic Clinic for 3 years before beginning her postal career at South Whitley Post Office in 1959, transferring to Larwill Post Office in 1975 until her retirement as Postmaster in 1989. She was a volunteer at Whitley Memorial Hospital for 12 years.

Her memberships include South Whitley United Methodist Church, Bridge Club since 1948 and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.

Surviving relatives include two children: Timothy L. Bishop, Kenosha Wis.; Patricia J. (Mark) Wheeler, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother: Keith Herr.

The visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the funeral home.The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.
