Janyce Lucille Givens Guckenberger, 80, of Nappanee, Ind., died at 1:15 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Wakarusa, Ind.
She was born Nov. 19, 1933, in Columbus, Ind., to Arthur and Opal (Vance) Givens. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1951, and she became a Phi Beta Phi Sorority member while attending two years at DePauw University.
Janyce was a member of the United Methodist Church of Columbus where she met and married Donald P. Guckenbergr on June 21, 1953. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. The Guckenbergers moved to Nappanee in 1955.
Janyce was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nappanee, and she loved to read, sew and knit. She was also a member of Tri Kappa Sorority.
Janyce also liked to volunteer to work with youth. Having three daughters, she was encouraged to become a Campfire leader. She got them outside to camp and travel. Janyce was a Campfire Board member and was later selected to become the only one in the United States to have more WO-HE-LO recipients per capata for its size. Later she became an assistant den leader for her grandson’s den in Cub Scouts. She agreed to be an Assistant Council Commissioner for the LaSalle Council, B.S.A.
She is survived by her husband: Donald; and three daughters: Debora (Theadore) Martens, Findley, Ohio; Joanna (Steve Phillips) Guckenberger, Nappanee; Janet (Jerry) Miller, Kettering, Ohio; one son: Donald Paul (Penny) Guckenberger II, Avon, Ind.; eight grandchildren: Jessica, Brady, Nathan, Brett, Bryce, Tyler, Sydney and Samantha; and one sister: JoAnn (Jack) Baker, Columbus, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her brother: James Thomas Givens; a sister-in-law: Norma Givens; a sister: Jean Lee Givens Boll; and a nephew: Steve Givens.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Nappanee United Methodist Church. The memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. that day in the church with Rev. Jim Davidson officiating.
Memorial contributions may be given to the United Methodist Church.
