897_0000172953Richard W. Schuh, 81, passed away at 7:03 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, in the Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, Ind., following a heart attack Thursday evening at his home.

He was born in Columbia City, Ind., on Jan. 12, 1933, to Waldo E. and Sarah Ilene King Schuh. He attended grade school in Columbia City, Thorncreek Township and graduated from the Larwill High School in 1953. After completing his education, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. On Oct. 24, 1953, he was united in marriage to Dolores Coyle and they made their first home on the Collinwood Farm in Columbia City later moving to their current home in Richland Township. 

He was employed by the Whitley County Highway Department for a number of years and retired from the Indiana Department of Transportation with 25 years of service as a heavy equipment operator. 

He was a member of the Columbia City American Legion Post #98 and the V.F.W. 

He is survived by his wife of 60 years; a son: Brian (Lucy) Schuh, Fort Wayne; a daughter: Vicki (Doug) Haiflich, Columbia City; two grandchildren: Ashley Baker and Tristan Brubaker; four great-grandchildren; two brothers: John and Jerry Schuh, Warsaw, Ind. 

He was preceded in death by a son: Tracy. 

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at the funeral home with Reverend Stephen S. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the South Whitley Cemetery with the Whitley County Korean War Veterans presenting military honors.
