Indiana State Police say it could be several days before they know why the driver of a semi tanker crashed his rig through a Fulton County home, but today police say neither drugs nor alcohol were involved.

At about 2:20 p.m. Thursday, the semi driver, David Bolt, 56, of Cabery, Ill., was eastbound on SR 114 just south of Akron when, for an unknown reason, he drove off of the highway and crashed through a residence. The 2014 Peterbilt semi-tractor, pulling an empty tanker trailer, hit the home that sat approximately 50 feet from the road. The home’s garage, kitchen and a bathroom where destroyed.

Bolt was trapped in the semi-tractor and had to be extricated by firefighters from the Henry Township and the Rochester Fire Departments. He was flown from the crash scene by Samaritan to a Fort Wayne hospital and suffered broken ribs, lacerations and a head injury. Bolt was wearing a seatbelt, which Trooper Mike Meiser believes prevented him from being more severely injured.

Bolt was driving for Indian River Transport based in Winter Haven, Fla. The accident happened in the 13000 block of SR 114 at the home of Pete and Melinda Cabrera, who were not home at the time.

This crash is still under investigation, but at this time neither the use of alcohol nor narcotics is suspected as having contributed to the crash. Troopers from the Indiana State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division completed an inspection on the semi–tractor, trailer and required paperwork. There were no violations found.

Trooper Meiser was assisted at the crash scene by Master Trooper Joe Swisher, conservation officers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Fulton County EMS and Fulton County Emergency Management.
