SYRACUSE – Tuesday night presented Wawasee’s girls swim program another chance to see what it was made of in the pool. And for the second time in as many meets, the very young Lady Warriors made striking impressions in a 129-57 win over visiting East Noble.
Freshman Paige Miller had a huge meet for the 2-0 Lady Warriors, helping the opening medley relay to a 1:56.70, then jumping back into the pool to win the 200 freestyle at a cool 2:00.23. Miller also won the 500 free at 5:16.06 and opened the 400 free relay’s time of 3:49.67.

Miller’s classmate, Shelby Adams, was part of both the medley and 400 relay teams with Miller and led a Wawasee sweep of the individual medley. Miller’s time of 2:23.07 won the event while teammates Cassidy Manning and Bridgette Yoder were second and third, respectively.
Adams also had a good swim in the breaststroke, but was outraced by East Noble ace Kari Guthrie, who won with a 1:12.27, a good two seconds better than the Wawasee freshman. Wawasee, however, brought home all three of its breaststrokers under 1:19, much to the delight of head coach Julie Robinson.
“It’s crazy talking about the 100 breast being one of my elite races,” laughed Robinson, admitting the event has become one of the team’s strongsuits despite Tuesday’s result. “It was a real issue in the breaststroke a couple years ago, along with the 500, and we have really worked on it. The kids coming in have stepped up and filled the spots. I’m just trying to look at each event as its own race and put the best kids I can into those races.”
Breanna Robinson was again part of four wins for Wawasee, taking the butterfly (57.38) and backstroke (57.20) on her own while working the medley relay and 400 relay. The backstroke time from Robinson also quietly broke the Wawasee pool record, originally held by Plymouth’s Kenzie Miller at 57.29.

Kendra Miller, dealing with sickness, still put in plenty of work in anchoring the medley relay and winning 200 free relay along with posting the top 50 freestyle time, beating teammate and birthday girl Mikala Mawhorter by 24-hundredths at 27.53.
Kendra Miller, Mawhorter, Manning and Kayla Hershberger were on the winning 200 free relay at 1:50.97 and Hershberger was the final piece of the 400 free relay win and runner-up in the backstroke.
Adding fuel to Wawasee’s fire Tuesday night was a great set of dives from Tori Sylvester. The junior opened her 2013 campaign with a 187.30 in her six-pack of dives, routinely hitting in the sixes from the quartet of judges.
Picking up East Noble’s other swim win was Mackenzie Daffron-Koebler, beating everyone in the 100 freestyle at 56.98, edging out Hershberger in the final 20 yards.
“I was really proud of the girls,” coach Robinson stated. “We have been working really hard during practice and came into the meet with a good attitude and wanted to race. That is the most important thing to me, seeing the girls compete and be competitive. That in itself was exciting.”
Wawasee will head full steam into the conference slate, first up this Saturday is a date at rival Warsaw. The boys will also open Saturday at Warsaw, with action scheduled to start at 10:45 a.m.
