Eugene Ray Hershberger, 72, of Nappanee, Ind., passed away unexpectedly at 1:41 p.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2014, while walking near his home.

He was born April 18, 1941, in Bremen, Ind., to Ezra and Laura (Schmucker) Hershberger. He married Ida Mae Schrock on Nov. 25, 1961, in Nappanee.

Mr. Hershberger retired from Borkholder Buildings and was also a retired minister from Bethel Conservative Mennonite Church, where he was still a member. He taught Sunday School for many years and volunteered at World Missionary Press. He enjoyed auctions and recycling, birds and anything outdoors. He also enjoyed his walks. Mr. Hershberger loved to help others.

He is survived by his wife; three sons: Wendell Hershberger, Wakarusa; Daryl (Lena) Hershberger and Trent (Sheila) Hershberger, both of Nappanee; two daughters: Dawn (Dave) Kuhns, Sullivan, Ill.; Eugina (Andy) Royster, Goshen, Ind.; 19 grandchildren; five great- granddaughters; one brother: Lamar (Clara) Hershberger, Nappanee; three sisters: Margaret Borkholder, Bremen; Luella (John) Gladieux, Bremen; and Donna (Dan) Joldersma, Goshen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law: Freemon D. Borkholder.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Bethel Conservative Mennonite Church and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, March 21, at the church. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 21, at the church. Bishop Lyle Miller and the church ministry will officiate. Burial will be in the Bethel Conservative Mennonite Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Kuhns, Jonny Kuhns, Benji Hershberger, Scott Hershberger, Bryce Hershberger, Craig Hershberger, Zachary Royster, Travis Royster and Lance Royster.
