Smith, DeVonDeVon “Smitty” Smith, 96, of Warsaw, Ind., passed away at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Mason’s Health & Rehabilitation, Warsaw.

He was born March 4, 1918, in Mentone, Ind., to Melvin Merle and Radie Fawn (Jones) Smith. His first marriage was to Grace Baugher in 1939 in Warsaw. He later married Opal Warstler on March 4, 1948, in Warsaw.

DeVon was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County and, for 30 years, owned Candy Cane, Dog & Suds, Cozy Cottage and The Calico Kitchen restaurants.

He attended Dutchtown Brethren Church in Warsaw.

He is survived by a daughter: Sandy (Gene) Zartman, Leesburg, Ind.; a granddaughter: Kimberly Zartman, Warsaw; a granddaughter-in-law: Rose Zartman, Leesburg; two additional grandchildren; a great-granddaughter: Alaina Zink, Winona Lake, Ind.; three additional great-grandchildren; his first wife: Grace Randall, Warsaw; and his half-sister: Betty Metzger, South Whitley, Ind.

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Dianna Wright; his second wife: Opal Smith; a grandson: Tony Zartman; his twin brother: Doyle Smith; a step son:  David Lee Halterman; his stepmother: Hazel P. Smith; a sister: Violet Smoker; and a half-sister: Florence Jean Snyder.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at the funeral home with Pastor Jack Worth of Dutchtown Brethren Church and Pastor Dennis Bollenbacher, Mason’s Health & Rehabilitation chaplain, officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
