On Sunday, Nov. 10, Sophia Boucher celebrated her eighth birthday. Though Sophia’s birthday was filled with love, candles and birthday cake one thing was missing from her party –presents. Though many may guess the lack of gifts would have been a sore point for Sophia, they would be shocked to hear it was the 8-year old girl’s idea to instead give her gifts away.

According to Kristina Boucher, Sophia’s mother, the annual donation of Sophia’s birthday gifts began on Sophia’s second birthday. Each year, Sophia is allowed to decide how she would like to utilize her gifts, either keeping them for herself or by making donations to an organization like Toys For Tots or a local food pantry. To date, Sophia has donated all her birthday gifts since the age of two.

“I give them to other kids and it makes me happy that I can bless them with stuff,” stated Sophia. “I have lots of toys and [when I hear about] the kids that don’t have any toys…its really sad to hear they don’t have any toys.”

Though Sophia has never met any of the children who have benefited from her amazing generosity and kindness, she did admit she would like to see their faces. Sophia stated that she likes to think the the children who receive her birthday presents enjoy their new gift.

Sophia and her mother will celebrate with friends and family tomorrow at the Brooke Point Inn. Sophia has asked that all gifts from her guests be donated to Toys For Tots and intends to use any gifts of money for the same purpose.
