Vonna Mae (Summers) Rettinger, 86, of Warsaw, Ind., and formerly of Bourbon, Ind., passed away from cancer early Sunday morning, March 2.

Vonna Mae was born at home on Sept. 4, 1927, to Viola (Walter) and Roy Summers in North Liberty, Ind. After graduating as salutatorian from North Liberty High School, she attended Indiana University in Bloomington for a year to study vocal music. She was married to Donald Keith Rettinger on Dec. 31, 1946.

A Bourbon area resident for most of her life, she had resided in Miller’s Senior Living facility in Plymouth for the last several years before recently moving to Garden’s at Lake City in Warsaw. She helped Donald on the farm until a back injury limited her participation, but she continued to tend flower gardens and was especially fond of roses. She continued her passion for music by playing the piano and organ at Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren, as well as singing in the local and district church choirs and once even played the role of Bloody Mary in Nappanee Civic Theater’s musical, South Pacific. She expanded her artistic skills through oil painting, concentrating mostly on landscapes, and collected various multi-colored glass vases and novelties.

She is survived by a sister: Joyce (Ed) Dolph; daughter: Mary Eloise (Byron) Smith; son: Hugh (Karin) Rettinger; six grandchildren: Leon Smith, Mark Smith, Anna Smith, Summer (Scott) Steenburg, Wes (Gretchen) Rettinger and Wil Rettinger; and two great-granddaughters: Sophia Steenburg (Summer and Scott); Isabelle Rettinger.

She was preceded in death by both parents; a brother: Gene (Marie) Summers; her husband; and a son: D. Neil Rettinger.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, Bourbon. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Nye officiating. Burial will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
